How To Shop Online Safely
If you have never purchased anything through the Internet, you may feel a bit wary about doing so. This is especially the case if you are not very familiar with computers and the online world. While there are scams and con artists on the Internet, there are also a plethora of honest businesspeople. Learning how to shop online in a safe manner is easy, you just have to know what to look for when visiting a website. There are certain ways to tell if you should buy from a particular online store.
The checkout area should have a web address that starts with https:// which means it is secure. In layman's terms, it is safe to submit your credit card information as it is encrypted and cannot be stolen by hackers. If you're just not sure about an online store, check the Better Business Bureau for complaints filed against them or simply Google their name to find out if any consumers have complained about the store. If not, they are probably safe to shop with. You can consider all the well known stores like Wal-Mart, Bloomingdales, Home Depot and the like safe to buy from online as they have very high security in place.
When shopping on sites like Ebay, Amazon and Craigslist, things get a bit trickier. Although Amazon does carry its own new merchandise, there is also independently owned merchandise that may be sold new or used. Ebay also sells new and used merchandise which the owner lists for sale. Craigslist is like a giant classified ads site, when you purchase from there you are throwing caution to the wind. Amazon and Ebay ask customers to rate their sellers, so at least you know if a seller has a good reputation. At Craigslist, it is anybody's guess so buyer beware.
Making your first Internet purchase is quite liberating. It allows you to do your shopping from home, on your time. Also it opens up stores that you may not have access to in your area. Not only that, you can even shop internationally. Many people have PayPal accounts for safe online shopping. PayPal lets you pay for purchases without exposing your credit card information. Many online stores and sellers do accept PayPal, although not every store does. Learning how to shop online is easy, and keeping your personal information safe is often a matter of common sense. Do not give out personal data unless you are sure it is safe to do so.
